More than 60 million smart cards have been issued by public transportation companies. Thus far the strategy of smart card at JR Group has been to:
• expand available tools such as mobile phones
• expand geographically from Tokyo to other major urban areas

• expand categories of business for customers to use smart cards
Through this strategy, JR group has succeeded in attracting and retaining customers. Smart cards issued by JR Group has become an essential part of the infrastructure in Japan and people use JR Group’s smart cards in their daily lives.
