“.Post – Postal innovation for the digital world”
December 11 2009, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) signed an agreement with the Internet Corporation for the Assignment of Names and Numbers (ICANN) for the right to be the sponsor of a top level internet domain named .post (“dot post”). .Post is meant to be a secure and trusted platform regulated by the UPU for the postal community that will integrate the postal physical, financial and electronic capabilities, to enable novel e-post, e-commerce, and e-government services. The present case study has two objectives.
The first is to present the .post ID which is a web-based address for realizing the integration of the three postal capabilities. A customer has to go to a post office to be authenticated and to get a .post ID. Using this ID, the customer can indicate his preferences for his physical delivery address (e.g. home, business, post box), for his electronic delivery address (e.g. email, SMS, digital postal mailbox) and for his payment options (e.g. Visa card, Post card, postal money transfer).
The second part of the presentation shows the impact of this integration on bringing innovation and trust to the development of e-post, e-commerce and e-government services. We will highlight today’s challenges for each of these services. Then we will show how the integration innovation that the .post platform will enable, can address these challenges.
This presentation will introduce to managers and decision-makers of the postal industry, including postal operators, technological providers and governments, a leading international experience in today’s postal world. Not only they will see some aspects of the future of the postal network, and the role of the post in the new world of digital transactions, but they also will discover how they can be part of it.
