Kevin Gillick

Executive Director – GlobalPlatform

Speaks at ID WORLD on Secure Identification

As Executive Director of GlobalPlatform, Kevin Gillick is responsible for driving awareness and accelerating adoption of the GlobalPlatform Specifications within global markets. Mr. Gillick coordinates and manages the organization’s strategic planning and oversees all marketing and business development initiatives within key vertical market sectors. He works closely with GlobalPlatform’s Technical Director, all three of the organization’s technical committees – Card, Device and Systems – and the GlobalPlatform Task Forces. Mr. Gillick is directly responsible to the Board of Directors and the GlobalPlatform membership.

Prior to his appointment to a full-time role within GlobalPlatform, Mr. Gillick held various marketing and business development positions at Datacard Group. Most recently, as Head of Corporate Marketing, he was responsible for worldwide marketing activities associated with the company’s range of secure identity, card personalization and card life cycle management solutions. He managed several worldwide corporate marketing functions and was directly responsible for Datacard Group’s market and brand positioning. While at Datacard Group, Mr. Gillick served the Smart Card Alliance on the Board of Directors, with a two year term as Chairman of the Board.

Mr. Gillick has served as GlobalPlatform’s full-time Executive Director since 2006. Prior to this appointment, and while in the employment of Datacard Group, he was actively involved in the organization as GlobalPlatform’s Marketing Center Chair.

“Aligning with international and regional standards”

GlobalPlatform’s Government Task Force continues to take steps to align its specifications with relevant regional and international standards to ensure they can be referenced and easily adopted by governments around the world. GlobalPlatform is working on two key areas at present: evolution to the strongest cryptography and the integration of GlobalPlatform technology to specific frameworks.

Evolution to strongest cryptography: governments are migrating away from the Data Encryption Standard (DES) towards Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) or elliptic curve to strengthen cryptography. In support of this, GlobalPlatform has released a Secure Channel Protocol (SCP) 03 which defines a new set of cryptographic methods based on AES. The SCP03 security mechanisms conform to the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 201, the NIST Special Publication (SP) 800-57 and also align with the 2010 mandates of NIST SP 800-78. GlobalPlatform is investigating integration into ISO 24727 Part 6 to allow any government to deploy services with a strong level of security. Efforts are on-going to propose the same standardized security services with the elliptic curve to support new use cases in government, such as strong privacy requirements and contactless migration. The difficulties are more pronounced in this area.

Integration of GlobalPlatform technology to specific frameworks: GlobalPlatform currently resides in the ANSI B10.12 Working Group and is engaged in the activity of defining a Generic Identity Command Set for governments that also aligns with international standards – in this instance with ISO 24727, 7816-13 (application management in a multi-application environment) and the Secure Channel Protocol SCP03. Upon completion, this will give governments a specific configuration as a foundation for an identity deployment, and opens the door to the industry being able to create a standardized test environment to confirm compliance to a known standard.

This presentation will provide delegates with a detailed outline of GlobalPlatform’s current activity within these two areas and what this will mean for the marketplace, as well as an insight into its future plans to support smart-card based government programs.
