“Identity management for financial inclusion and branchless transactions: a case study”

The extent of financial exclusion is high in rural Pakistan where it is infeasible for financial institutions to operate in traditional ways. Recently, Pakistan has used its Identity Management infrastructure to enable small businesses and corner shops to act as “branchless banks” using only a mobile phone. This platform has been used in conjunction with the Government’s income support program and is resulting in financial inclusion and, to some extent, poverty alleviation.
