Biographies of the Members of the Technical Committee

Kevin Ashton
VP Marketing
ThingMagic
Mr. Kevin Ashton was previously Co-Founder and Executive Director of MIT’s Auto-ID Center, an Associate Director of the Procter & Gamble Company, and a Visiting Engineer at MIT. In addition to his responsibilities at ThingMagic, Mr. Ashton lectures on RFID and related business impacts at MIT, speaks to audiences around the world on the “Sensor Age,” and is writing a book about RFID.

Dr. Joseph J. Atick
Executive Vice President, Chief Strategic Officer
L-1 Identity Solutions
Dr. Joseph Atick is Executive VP & Chief Strategic Officer of L-1 Identity Solutions. Dr. Atick is known as one of the early pioneers of the biometrics industry. Prior to joining L-1 Identity Solutions, Dr. Atick served as President and CEO of Identix, today an L-1 Identity Solutions Company. Prior to that, he co-founded one of the original facial recognition companies, Visionics Corporation. Over the years, Dr. Atick co-founded and managed several companies focused on technology transfer and development, and has served as technical advisor to many high-tech organizations, including NATO. He also led the Computational Neuroscience Laboratory at Rockefeller University and the Neural Cybernetics Group at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Dr. Atick holds a Ph.D. in Mathematical Physics from Stanford University.

Remy de Tonnac

Mr. Remy de Tonnac was a Partner of VERTEX Management funds in Europe and sat on the board of several technology and services companies of the VERTEX portfolio, including the chairmanship of INSIDE Contactless. Prior to that, Mr. de Tonnac was with GEMPLUS, as a member of the executive committee of the group and as Chief Executive Officer, based in Singapore, from 1991 to 1998, and then in Redwood Shores (California). He was responsible for overseeing all field operations – including sales, marketing, manufacturing, technical support, research & development, finance and human resources in North and South America.

Martin George

Smart Sensors Limited
Mr. Martin George is CEO of Smart Sensors Limited, founded jointly with Professor Don Monro at the University of Bath, England, to develop an independent new set of algorithms for iris biometrics. The company is also collaborating in work on associated issues and technologies that are vital if biometrics technology is to be something that can be successfully deployed universally, reliably and economically in access control, secure documents and identification applications. Mr. George also provides systems and strategy consulting through ID Craft, specialising in the commercial, human factors and operations impact of ID technologies, including TV image processing, RFID, smart cards and biometrics used in identity determination, protection and tracking applications.

Christer Härkönen

Mr. Christer Härkönen is Senior Vice President of UPM Raflatac RFID business. Before joining the company he held various management positions at Elcoteq, a global electronics manufacturing services company. During 2000-2004 he headed Elcoteq’s largest business area, Terminal Products, and was responsible for strategic accounts. Mr Härkönen has held various production, logistics and purchasing positions in the electronics industry since 1984.

Bodo Ischebeck

Mr. Bodo Ischebeck is the Chief Executive Officer of Magellan Technology and is working for Magellan since 2005. His main objectives are to expand the Australian based RFID company, known for the PJM technology complying to ISO 18000-3 Mode 2, into global markets. He has a strong background in RFID, Chip cards and Semiconductors by working in the semiconductor industry for more than 12 years. From 2003 to 2005 he was responsible for the Ident Solutions Group and RFID semiconductor portfolio at Infineon Technologies in Munich. Mr. Ischebeck holds an MBA and MS degree in Electrical Engineering.

Joseph E. Krull

Mr. Joseph E. Krull is currently a Senior Manager in Accenture’s Technology Consulting Security Group. He is engaged on major Identity and Access Management projects and initiatives. He previously served as the Security Director for Accenture’s largest Government services project. He has been a security professional for more than 30 years. Prior to joining Accenture in 2005, he was a Chief Security Officer for Fortune 500/Global 1000 companies, an independent security consultant and a senior intelligence and security officer for the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency at American embassies overseas. He has worked in more than 100 countries and is a frequent public speaker on security and privacy matters. He holds multiple international security and audit certifications. In 2006 he served as Vice Chairman of the ASIS International IT Security Council and was inducted into the Institute of Information Security Professionals.

Paul McKeown

Mr. Paul McKeown has been a prominent member of the ID community for many years. He specialises in helping clients introduce new technologies for business value. In a long career at IBM he has held a number of senior positions including global leader of smart card solutions, European leader in wireless e-business and a variety of roles in Marketing, Development and Sales. Mr. McKeown currently working with government clients to improve the security, safety and convenience of modern borders.

Dr. Alastair MacWillson
Global Managing Partner Security Practice
Accenture
Dr. Alastair MacWillson is the Global Managing Partner of Accenture’s global Security Practice and works with business and government leaders around the world on critical issues such as security, trust, privacy and compliance. He also serves on the leadership team of Accenture’s Global Technology Consulting business. Prior to joining Accenture, Dr. MacWillson spent 16 years with the UK Foreign Service specialising in political and technical risk analysis on postings in the former Soviet Union, the Middle East and the USA. In 1990 he joined PriceWaterhouseCoopers, and in 1992, took on the role of global lead for the Technology Risk and e-Business Services, a group of 2,500 technology and security professionals. He was also the founder and interim global CEO for beTRUSTed, PriceWaterhouseCooper’s managed identity services spin-off.

Dr. Toni Merschen
Group Head, Chip Centre of Excellence
MasterCard International
Dr. Toni Merschen is responsible for managing all business and technology aspects, development and deployment of chip-based business solutions for MasterCard’s global Advanced Payment Solutions department. He is responsible for developing, coordinating and executing MasterCard’s chip strategies and tactics on a global basis. Prior to joining MasterCard International, Dr. Merschen was head of Citigroup’s global competence centre for chip card-enabled solutions, mobile financial services, PKI, and biometrics. Previously, while working for IBM, he had worldwide responsibility for their R&D activities and strategic alliances for smart card technology and solutions.

Tom Miller

Mr. Tom Miller is currently a principal in Stinsights, an international management consulting company that focuses on sales/marketing integration and organization innovation and renewal. Mr. Miller was President of Intermec a leader in the AIDC industry in 2004 and 2005 and a corporate officer in UNOVA Corporation its parent company. Prior to his position as President Mr. Miller served in the executive capacities of Executive Vice President, Global Sales and Marketing from 2001 to 2003 and Senior Vice President, Americas and System and Solutions 1999 – 2001.

George Reynolds

Avery Dennison
Mr. Reynolds is vice president of worldwide sales and marketing for Avery Dennison’s RFID division, which has been identified as a major strategic focus for the corporation. Prior to assuming this leadership role at Avery Dennison, Mr. Reynolds was vice president of Tyco Fire & Security’s RFID business. At Tyco, he previously provided global oversight of the company’s Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) business during the critical period of integrating Sensormatic Electronics Corporation’s operations into Tyco.

Scott R. Silverman

Mr. Scott R. Silverman was named Chairman and Chief Executive Officer in March of 2003 after having served as a special advisor to the Board of Directors since August 2001. In March 2002, he was appointed to the Board of Directors and named President. From September 1999 to March 2002, Mr. Silverman operated his own private investment-banking firm.

The Honorable James W. Ziglar

Mr. James W. Ziglar brings more than 40 years of experience in management, marketing, finance, law, and public policy to his leadership of Cross Match. He was named President and CEO in August 2005. Earlier in his career, Mr. Ziglar was an investment banker for 18 years and a practicing lawyer for eight years. He has served as Sergeant at Arms of the U.S. Senate, as Assistant Secretary of the Interior, and as the last Commissioner of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service before it was merged into the Department of Homeland Security. A member of the Board of the International Biometric Industry Association, he earned his undergraduate and law degrees from The George Washington University.
